The CHESLA CGS CT Ivette Rivera Dreyer Memorial Scholarship

Since 2007 College Goal Sunday has assisted thousands of prospective college students file their FAFSA applications. At every College Goal Sunday event each CGS site was able to award a scholarship that the student would receive once they enrolled in college the following Fall semester.

Ivette Rivera Dreyer

Ivette Rivera Dreyer was responsible for introducing College Goal Sunday to Connecticut in 2007. Under her guidance and leadership, College Goal Sunday Connecticut grew from six sites reaching 300 students to fifteen sites assisting 1,200 students annually.

Ivette was born in Juncos, Puerto Rico on August 20, 1958 and passed away on December 14, 2016. She is survived by her husband and two children. Upon arriving in Connecticut, Ivette completed her studies at the University of Hartford. While at the University she was heavily involved in empowerment of Latino community services and educational outreach. She dedicated her professional career to assisting thousands of students with the ability to attend college.

Shortly after earning her degree, Ivette accepted a position as an administrator for the Connecticut Community College system. She was the Director of Financial Aid at Manchester Community College for more than 15 years. Frequently she provided financial aid and pre-college workshops for high school students throughout the Hartford metro area. Her dedication to her students was awe-inspiring to anyone lucky enough to know her. Ivette was also active in CAPFAA, the Connecticut Association of Professional Financial Aid Administrators. She served as the CAPFAA representative to EASFAA (the regional association) and chaired or was otherwise active in several CAPFAA committees, such as Diversity, Early Awareness, and Mentee-for-a-Day.

When diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, she remained dedicated in the work and in her will to fight her illness. She remained a brave, iron-willed woman, even throughout her final months. College Goal Sunday Connecticut honors the dedication and love Ivette Rivera Dreyer left for us.

Ivette Rivera Dreyer
When I hear the words “College Goal Sunday,” I immediately think of Ivette Rivera-Dreyer. For more than 10 years, Ivette coordinated College Goal Sunday events at over a dozen concurrent locations throughout the state. CGS pairs hundreds of families with practicing aid administrators who volunteer their time and expertise to assist in completing and electronically filing a FAFSA. Ivette’s leadership and commitment left an indelible mark on our profession and her legacy lives on through College Goal Sunday. Thank you, Ivette, for making it possible for thousands of students to find their way to college!

I worked with Ivette closely for over eight years, since the beginning stages of the establishment of College Goal Sunday in CT, back when I was still a student worker. As a student worker, I remember Ivette’s encouragement for all students to get involved in the community and the passion she demonstrated for educating others with her resources, expertise, and network. She was a “Yes, I can!” and “Yes, we can!” person, especially when it involved providing services to students. Every year she looked forward to the College Goal Sunday events hoping to impact more families and students new to the financial aid process. She had a strong commitment to the Spanish-speaking population, and she always “made room” for the Latinos/Hispanics to come to CGS and feel comfortable with the process as this group had a special place in her heart. Thank you, Ivette, for your years of service, your contagious smile, and your can-do attitude!
